미국의 한인 사회에서는 학생들이 상위권 대학에 다니는 것에 많은 에너지를 쏟는다. 상위권 대학에서 학사 학위를 취득하는 것이 유리할 수는 있지만 미국에서의 커리어 성공 여부는 학생이 중요한 기술을 습득하고 적용하는 것에 더 많이 좌우된다. 실제로, 미국 10대 대기업의 CEO 중 단 한명만이 아이비리그 대학에서 학사 학위를 취득했다.
미국에서 태어나고 자란 나의 경험과 8년 동안 수백 명의 대학생 및 고등학생 대상 기업 인턴십, 취업 및 대학 입학 컨설팅 경력을 바탕으로 성공적인 미래를 위하여 학생들이 개발해야 할 6개 중요 기술을 제시한다.
1. 커뮤니케이션
거의 대부분의 기업들이 지원자의 강력한 커뮤니케이션 기술을 필요로 한다. 이것은 말과 글로 자신을 명확하게 표현하는 것이 포함된다. 학생들과 이야기를 할 때 내가 자주 맞닥뜨리게 되는 한가지 문제는 학생들이 필러 단어(filler words)를 얼마나 자주 사용하는지로, “like,” “um,” “you know,” “I mean” 과 같은 것들이다. 이러한 필러 단어를 사용하는 것은 학생들을 덜 전문적이어 보이도록 하는 경우가 많으며 좋지 못한 인상을 남기기도 한다. 필러 단어를 사용하는 대신 잠시 말을 멈추는 것이 좋다. 글을 잘 쓰는 것도 많은 학생들이 향상시킬 수 있는 중요한 기술이다. 무료 및 저가의 온라인 수업이 많이 있으므로 이를 활용하면 학생들이 보다 명확하고 간결하게 작문을 향상시킬 수 있다.
2. 세부사항에 대한 주의
세부적인 사항에 주의를 기울이는 것은 많은 산업 분야에서 성공을 위해 중요한 기술이다. 세부 사항에 주의를 잘 기울이는 개인은 실수를 발견할 수 있으며 높은 수준으로 업무를 완료할 수 있다. 세부 사항에 대한 주의 부족은 학생의 커리어를 매우 빠르게 탈선시킬 수 있는데, 과제를 적절하게 완료할 수 있는 학생의 능력에 대해 다른 사람들이 신뢰를 잃게 만들도록 하기 때문이다. 제출한 과제에 철자 오류나 기타 부주의한 실수가 없는지 지속적으로 확인함으로써 이 기술을 키워 나가야 한다.
3. 신뢰성
신뢰성은 동료 및 상사와의 신뢰를 구축하거나 무너뜨릴 수도 있는 또다른 핵심 특성이다. 신뢰가 가는 개인은 정시에 출근하고, 일정에 맞춰 작업을 완료하며 약속을 지킨다. 또한 자신의 행동에 책임을 지며 실수에 대해서도 마찬가지이다.
4. 문제 해결
문제 해결에는 복잡한 문제들을 식별, 분석 및 해결하는 능력이 포함된다. 강한 문제 해결 기술을 가지고 있는 개인은 창의적으로 생각하여 여러가지 해결책을 고려할 수 있으며, 성공적인 결과를 이끌어 낼 수 있는 결정을 내릴 수 있다. 많은 기업들은 해결책이 명확하지 않을때마저 방법을 찾아낼 수 있는 강력한 문제 해결사를 찾는다.
5. 끈기
끈기가 강한 개인은 어려움을 만나더라도 계속해서 나아갈 수 있다. 나는 이 기술이 커리어 성공에서 필수적이라고 믿는데, 모든 사람은 커리어의 어느 시점에서 중대한 장애물 및 좌절에 직면하게 되기 때문이다.
6. 네트워크 구축하기
강한 네트워크를 구축하고 유지하는 것 또한 커리어 성공에 매우 중요하다. 미래의 많은 기회들은 개인의 네트워크에서 비롯된다. 네트워크를 구축한다는 것은 자신의 분야에서 동료, 상사, 클라이언트 및 다른 전문가들과 긍정적인 관계를 발전시키는 것을 의미한다. 강한 네트워크를 구축하는 것에는 시간이 걸리므로, 학생들은 크고 다양한 네트워크를 구축하는 것에 최대한 빨리 집중해야 한다.
학부모는 아이들에게 위 기술의 중요성을 먼저 인지시킴으로써 도움을 줄 수 있다. 또한 학생들은 이 기술들에 대해 더 공부하고 교과외 클럽 혹은 파트타임 일을 통해 책임있는 자리를 맡음으로써 이 기술들을 더 발전시킬 수 있다. 이 기술들을 지속적으로 개발하고 실행함으로써 다른 학생들과 차별화되고 성공적인 커리어를 위한 길을 닦을 수 있다.

“Six Essential Skills for Future Career Success”
In the Korean American community, a lot of energy is placed on students attending highly ranked colleges. While obtaining an undergraduate degree from a highly ranked college can have advantages, a student’s career success in America depends more on the student acquiring and applying critical skills. In fact, only one CEO from the 10 largest U.S. companies obtained their undergraduate degree from an Ivy-League college.
Based on my experiences having been born and raised in the U.S., along with my eight years coaching hundreds of college and high school students to obtain corporate internships, jobs, and university admissions, I present six skills that are critical for students to develop for a successful future:
- Communication
Almost all employers require applicants to have strong communication skills. This includes expressing oneself clearly both in speech and in writing. One common problem that I encounter when speaking with students is how often they use filler words, such as “like,” “um,” “you know,” and “I mean.” Using such filler words often makes a student sound less professional and creates a bad impression. A student should pause instead of using such filler words. Writing well is another key skill that many students can improve on. There are many free and low-cost online courses that students can take to improve writing more clearly and concisely.
- Attention to Detail
Attention to detail is a critical skill for success in many industries. Individuals with strong attention to detail can catch mistakes and ensure that work is completed to a high standard. Lack of attention to detail can very quickly derail a student’s career, as this causes others to lose trust in the student’s ability to properly complete a task. A student should build their attention to detail skills by consistently checking that their submitted assignments have no misspellings or other careless mistakes.
- Reliability
Reliability is another key attribute that can build or destroy trust with colleagues and supervisors. Reliable individuals show up to work on time, complete their tasks on schedule, and follow through on commitments. They are also accountable for their actions and take responsibility for mistakes.
- Problem Solving
Problem solving involves the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve complex problems. Individuals with strong problem-solving skills are able to think creatively, consider multiple solutions, and make decisions that lead to successful outcomes. Many employers seek strong problem solvers who can find solutions even when the solutions are not obvious.
- Persistence
Individuals with strong persistence skills are able to keep going even when faced with difficulties. I believe that this skill essential for career success as every individual encounter significant roadblocks and setbacks at some point in their career.
- Building a Network
Building and maintaining a strong network is also very important for career success. A lot of future opportunities result from an individual’s network. Building a network means developing positive relationships with colleagues, supervisors, clients, and other professionals in one’s field. As building a strong network takes time, students should focus on building a large and diverse network as soon as possible.
Parents can help their children by first informing them about the importance of these skills. Students can also develop these skills by further studying about these skills, as well as taking on positions of responsibility through extracurricular clubs or part-time work. Constant development and execution of these skills will set a student apart from the rest and pave the way for a successful career.
